General Hugh Mercer, a general in the Revolutionary War, was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. He was a doctor who had fled Scotland after the Battle of Culloden, where he had supported the Stuart cause.
This bronze statue of General Mercer was erected in 1906 by the United States Government. The sculptor was Edward Valentine of Richmond Virginia, who did the famous reclining statue of Robert E. Lee at Washington and Lee University.
General George S. Patton of World War II fame was a great, great, great,, grandson of Hugh Mercer.
