We stopped at Sideling Hill on the way to Columbus, Ohio on June 23, 2004. Sideling Hill is located approximately 33 miles west of Hagerstown or 6 miles west of Hancock in Washington County. This is the view to the east.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee's infantry marched north through the Shenandoah Valley and western Maryland in May 1863 as his calvary, led by General J.E.B. Stuart harassed union supply lines to the east. Union General Joseph Hooker, replaced on June 28 by General George G. Meade, led the army of the Potomac. The Federals collided with Lee's army at Gettysburg Pensylvania on July 1.
